02.09.2013 - 02.09.2013
Today started at 0430 and after a quick breakfast we made out way up the Kings Highway to Queanbeyan. It took somewhat longer that usual due to a number of fog patches but we managed to arrive there at 0730.
Transferred our luggage and Natalie drove us to the bus interchange by 0830. The Murray's Express service to Sydney had just started to board and we departed slightly before the advertised time of 0900. The trip to Sydney was uneventful and despite a slight holdup due to road works and a broken-down truck we arrived at Central Station just on 1230.
A quick dash in a taxi to the White Bay Cruise Terminal cost us $25 but there isn't really any alternative. Check-in was quite efficient and we were through Immigration and Security and safely aboard by just after 1315. Lunch at the Horizon Buffet and back to our quite spacious stateroom where Jenny's luggage had arrived. No sign of mine.
Assembled at Muster Station A (the Wheelhouse Bar on Deck 7) for the General Emergency drill. We had arrive early so were fortunate enough to get a seat. Drill over and back to the cabin to stow the life jackets. Still no sign of my luggage - strange ??
Up on deck to capture some images of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House and it was almost time for dinner, Should I mention that my luggage was still AWOL ?? Mentioned it to the steward Joseph and headed for the Rigoletto for the early seating. We've been allocated to a table of eight, a 90 year-old widower from Port Macquarie, a sixties couple from Mackay and another old couple from Sydney. An interesting challenge to try to speak to people across a large round table, especially when one is almost totally deaf and the other has trouble hearing. Add to that my own loss of hearing acuity coupled with a generally elevated ambient noise level you can imagine it wasn't my best ever experience.
Back to the cabin and still no sign of my luggage. Joseph suggests contacting the Purser's Desk which I duly did. They knew exactly where my suitcase was, held in Security pending the identification of a sharp object found by the scanners. Turned out to be a large toe-nail clipper which I was permitted to keep provided I kept it secured.
Clocks ahead an hour tonight.
